Most houses in Lansing went up around 1987, part of the broader 1980s-90s building wave across this part of the service area. That means the garage door on the front of the house is almost always a steel sectional door, 16x7 for a two-car opening or 9x7 for a single, built in an era before foam-core insulation was standard on entry-level builder doors. The panels are plain steel, often with a light embossed wood-grain stamp, bolted in sections to vertical stiles. Replacing one means matching the panel height and the embossing pattern to what's already on the door - on a door this age, that's not always a stock item, and sometimes the whole section run has to come out instead of just one panel. We pull the section, check the stiles and end hardware for rust before we hang anything new, and make sure the replacement section carries the same curvature as the rest of the door. A mismatched panel on an otherwise sound 1987 door looks worse than the dent did.
